UK building societies have insisted they are still a safe haven for savers, despite a raft of major mutuals having their financial strength called into question this week.
The Liberal Democrats have thrown their weight behind MoneySavingExpert.com’s campaign to force banks and building societies to publish savings rates on customer statements
City watchdog, the Financial Services Authority (FSA), is proposing to increase the amount of protection given to savers to at least half a million pounds, in special circumstances only. In some cases, protection will be unlimited.
