Netflix prices are rising by up to £24 a year

Here's how much the price of each Netflix plan will rise by:

Netflix last raised its prices in February 2025, and this round of hikes is on a similar scale. It also axed its cheapest 'Basic' plan in July 2024, meaning existing subscribers had to pay £36 a year more to watch without adverts.

For most, there are three options:

• If you're not already on the cheapest plan, consider downgrading. If, for example, you're paying for Premium but can live without the extra features it provides, simply downgrading to Standard no ads would save you £7 a month or £84 a year.

• Split the cost of a plan with someone you live with. With Standard you can watch on two screens simultaneously, and you don't have to watch the same thing (and on all plans you can create individual accounts).
  
  So getting one plan and splitting the cost with a partner, family member or housemate means paying £7 a month for ad-free streaming and full access to the Netflix catalogue (some content is unavailable on Standard with adverts), rather than £13.99 a month each for individual subscriptions.
  
  If you live with two or three others who use Netflix (or would do), you can save even more by splitting Premium between you, as it allows you to watch on up to four screens simultaneously. It now costs £20.99 a month, but splitting it between three people would mean ultra HD streaming for £7 a month, and £5.25 a month between four.

• If you know someone with Netflix you don't live with, ask them to add you as an extra member. If you've a partner, family member or friend who you don't live with who subscribes to Standard no ads, you could ask them to add you to their plan as an extra member without adverts for £6.99 a month. If you then split the total cost, you'd each pay £10.49 a month for Netflix without ads, instead of £13.99 each for standalone Standard no ad plans.

For most there a few options:

• Cancel Netflix without penalty. Unlike digital TV packages where you're under contract, you can cancel your Netflix subscription at anytime without being penalised. Simply go to your account and select 'cancel membership' – you'll still be able to use Netflix as normal for the remainder the final month you've paid for. Full help in Netflix hacks.

• Check out alternatives. The other big streaming services offer plans that are cheaper or offer more for your money than Netflix. See the top streaming services compared for further info, but in brief:
  - Disney+ Standard with Ads is £5.99 a month (though you can get it for less – see Disney+ deals).
  - Now Entertainment is £7.99 a month with ads, but £4.99 a month if you lock-in for six months.
  - Amazon Prime Video is £8.99 a month with ads, but you get all the other Amazon Prime benefits.
  - Apple TV+ is £9.99 a month without ads.

• Get over two months of top films and TV for free. It's not a long-term solution, but many streaming services offer free trials. Just remember to always cancel before you're charged if you don't want to keep the service. See our list of free streaming service trials, including:

  - Apple TV+ – seven days, or one month with Apple One.
  - Paramount+ – seven days.

• Don't pay for more than one streaming service at a time. It's easy to feel you'll miss out if you unsubscribe (as Martin has said in the past, it's the reason free trials are offered), but subscribing to Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, and Netflix simultaneously costs at least £33 a month.
