Emily has over six years of experience in journalism, starting her career as a local news reporter in 2018 before joining MSE in May 2021. She has tackled a range of critical topics at MSE, including consumer rights, energy, debt, and financial regulation.

Some of Emily's biggest stories include Ryanair's barring of customers who received Covid refunds, the shutdown of tax rebate firm Tax Credits Ltd for forgery, and discrepancies in the Warm Home Discount scheme. These stories have been covered by some of the UK's biggest newspaper outlets, including the Daily Mirror, the Daily Express, The Sun and The Guardian.

Emily has earned several award wins and nominations, including winning the Rising Star of the Year Award at the Headline Money Awards in 2023 and being shortlisted for the Wincott Foundation's Personal Finance Journalist of the Year Award alongside MSE founder Martin Lewis. In 2022, she also won an MHP's 30Under30 Young Journalist Award in the Personal Finance category.

Outside of journalism, Emily is passionate about writing plays and short fiction, and enjoys hiking, running, and reading.

If you have old Christmas stamps you CAN continue to use them after 31 January 2023 following a Royal Mail U-turn. The postal service had initially announced, as part of a wider shake-up, that Christmas stamps would be replaced by new barcoded versions from 31 January 2023. This would have rendered old festive stamps useless unless swapped.

The Government has announced sweeping changes to the student loan system in England that will drastically increase the cost of education for those attending university, including lowering the repayment threshold to £25,000 a year and increasing the length of time over which graduates repay their loans by 10 years.

Millions of Sky broadband, TV and home phone customers will see prices hiked by £43 a year on average from Friday 1 April. Meanwhile, Sky Mobile customers who use their data, or make calls and send texts in the EU will pay £2 a day in roaming charges from Tuesday 3 May. But affected customers may be able to cancel contracts penalty-free as a result.

Amazon has shelved plans to stop people using Visa credit cards to buy items on the shopping platform from 19 January. It means users no longer need to update their payment details, although they can continue to do so in order to be awarded free credit.

The Bank of England has increased base rates to 0.5% from 0.25% after the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted in favour of a rise. The base rate is used by the central bank to charge other banks and lenders when they borrow money – and influences what borrowers pay and savers earn.
