Senior Energy & Utilities Analyst

Clare joined MSE in September 2021 after a career as a chartered accountant. She started out as a writer on MSE's Money team, exploring everything from student loans to pensions, before moving across to the Energy and Utilities team in November 2022.

As Senior Energy and Utilities Analyst, Clare is responsible for the quarterly Price Cap updates to our guides, and the daily updates to our popular Should I fix my energy? guide, which explains if it's worth fixing your energy tariff, as well showing the current energy deals available. Clare also helps out on the Cheap Energy Club.

Clare has written several new guides, including Heat pumps explained, Is solar battery storage worth it?, How to switch your energy and, most recently, Winter Fuel Payments.

Outside of work, Clare's passionate about travel and embarks on global adventures with her family as often as she can (on a budget of course!). She also loves running and yoga to keep a healthy body and mind.

Around two million people across the UK use fuels such as heating oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), coal or biomass to heat their homes. The majority should have received a £200 support payment in February from their electricity supplier, but if not, you can now apply for the payment.

The Prime Minister today (19 October) said she was "completely committed" to the triple lock, meaning millions of people claiming the state pension could receive a 10.1% increase in payments from April. However, given the ongoing cost of living crisis and economic uncertainty the Government has yet to officially confirm whether this will be the case, or whether benefits will rise by the same amount.

If you're one of the 46,000 Safe Hands customers left in the lurch after the funeral provider went bust in March - and you can't get a refund from your card firm - you'll need to contact Safe Hands' administrator to get your money. But you'll only receive up to 20% of what you're owed. You also need to consider alternative funeral arrangements as Safe Hands' plans will no longer be honoured from November.
