More than 2,400 homes have claimed a council tax discount for having a self-contained annexe or 'granny flat' . But the Government believes more people are entitled to the discount.

Households who try to get their council tax band lowered have been given a boost after the Government said it will push the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) to consider appeals no matter when they are made. Currently, many people are wrongly turned away if they appeal more than six months after moving in.

It's exactly 20 years since most homes in England and Scotland were valued to place them into council tax bands, yet still, hundreds of thousands are paying too much.
