If you had an energy prepayment meter forcibly installed or your smart meter was remotely switched to prepay mode without your permission, you could be entitled to compensation of up to £1,000 and may even be eligible to have your energy debts written off.

If you are aged 75 or over, or have a child under two, energy suppliers will soon be permanently banned from forcibly installing a prepayment meter in your home. It comes as the energy regulator's current code of practice is to be extended, and become mandatory, in a bid to protect more households. Firms flouting the rules, which will take force from 8 November, will face fines.  

Furious E.on pay-as-you-go energy customers say they have been left without heating and power in the middle of winter after the firm admitted thousands have seen delays in online and app payments reaching meters. But you can top-up over the phone in the meantime. 

More customers than ever are switching energy suppliers, with increasing numbers deserting the traditional big six firms in favour of smaller providers, a new report has revealed.
