Nationwide customers are to be refunded £900,000 after a review ordered by the competition watchdog found the building society failed to properly warn them they were about to be charged for using an unarranged overdraft.

Hundreds of Nationwide customers have had their monthly credit card repayment taken twice, with one family overcharged by up to £2,500, MoneySavingExpert.com can reveal.

Nationwide will refund £6 million to current account customers, after failing to send customers the correct alerts warning them about unarranged overdraft fees.

Less than two months after the financial regulator announced that fixed daily and monthly overdraft fees will be replaced with a single interest rate, Nationwide has announced its rate will be a whopping 39.9% APR – meaning the majority of its customers who use their overdrafts are set to be worse off from November. 

Nationwide is to lower the maximum age covered by its packaged bank account travel insurance from 75 to 70, while raising the surcharge paid by older customers from £50 to £65. 

Banks will now have to publish how likely their customers are to recommend them for customer service as part of new measures designed to make it simpler for consumers to compare and switch.
