The price of petrol at the pumps is slowly creeping up again, dashing motorists' hopes of an average price of £1/litre.

Almost 50,000 drivers made claims against councils across Britain for damage caused to their vehicles by potholes in the last financial year, new figures shows. But only 23% of claims were successful.

Drivers are paying about 10% less for their car insurance compared with a year ago, according to the AA. However, it warns they are likely to rise this year.

Car insurance prices may be rising, but the increasing use of pay-as-you-drive schemes – or telematics – is helping young motorists keep costs down, with premiums for this group falling by more than 21% in the last 12 months.

Motorists filling up at Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco will pay less for their fuel from Thursday after the supermarkets announced another price cut for both petrol and diesel.

Update: 11 December 2014: Sainsbury's has announced that it has today cut the price of unleaded by 1p/litre across its 298 forecourts.
