Energy suppliers have been told to do more to help support vulnerable customers this winter by the energy regulator. Improvements called for include demonstrating more clearly how pre-payment customers, who may be self-disconnecting, are identified and supported.

Customers of collapsed rent-to-own company BrightHouse, who may have been mis-sold high cost loans, will not get any money back after the firm's joint administrators said there wasn't enough cash to refund people. However, those still repaying BrightHouse loans must continue to do so as the debts have now been sold on.

Fake text energy scam
Watch out for fake text messages claiming to be from the Government, inviting you to apply for the £400 energy bill support. They're a scam – the £400 will be paid automatically. You do not need to apply.

Household energy bills in Northern Ireland will be capped from November, the Government has confirmed. An extra £100 will also be given to those who live off-grid in the UK and use alternative fuels, such as heating oil or LPG to heat their homes. Here's what you need to know.

Ovo Energy has announced a new support package for its customers, which will kick in this winter. Crucially, it plans to introduce a payment holiday for prepayment customers in debt from 1 October. Other measures include increasing the amount of emergency credit prepay users can get, offering free energy saving products and boiler services, plus additional funding for its grants scheme.

Thousands of Shell Energy prepayment meter customers on standard variable tariffs will receive a refund of just under a tenner on average after being overcharged for the past three years. In total, 11,275 customers will receive a share of £136,970.
