Rail fares in England will go up next year but by less than the rate of inflation, the Government has said. The exact rise is yet to be announced but the increase will come in March 2023 instead of the usual rise in January.

A viral post being shared on Facebook and Twitter alongside a photo of MoneySavingExpert.com (MSE) founder Martin Lewis claims people can "fight extortionate price hikes" by submitting complaints and subject access requests to their energy supplier. RAC breakdown cover policyholders will see prices hiked, in some cases by more than 30%, at renewal. But if you've had a notification of a price rise, you don't have to accept it. You may be able to leave penalty-free, or haggle to get the price lowered.

The Bank of England has increased the base rate to 1.75% from 1.25% - the biggest single rise in 27 years. This rate is used by the central bank to charge other banks and lenders when they borrow money – and influences what borrowers pay and savers earn.

Millions of people are facing "unaffordable" energy bill rises from October, as the price cap is now predicted to rise from £1,971 a year to £3,582 a year for someone on typical use. A further 19% rise is expected in January 2023, taking typical bills to £4,266 a year, according to the latest forecast from energy analysts Cornwall Insight.

The price cap on how much energy suppliers can charge households will now change every three months from October, instead of every six months, regulator Ofgem has confirmed. Due to the current high wholesale energy costs, it means we're likely to see price rises TWICE this winter.

Yet savings of £1,000s a year may be available if homeowners remortgage to more competitive deals – something they may want to consider sooner rather than later with further interest rate rises expected.
