Save big by shopping third-party

Nintendo Switch Online is Nintendo’s paid subscription service for the Switch. It’s required for online play in most games, and also includes access to classic Nintendo titles, cloud saves, and exclusive member offers.

There’s a cheaper standard membership, plus a pricier Expansion Pack tier that adds extra game libraries and downloadable content. See our tier table for more info.

While Nintendo sells subscriptions direct, you can often save by buying membership codes from third-party retailers or by stacking time in advance rather than paying month by month.

Below is a breakdown of the best Nintendo Switch Online deals we’ve found across the different tiers and subscription lengths:

App available to download on smartphones & tablets

Based on the popular Nintendo game Mario Kart, Mario Kart Tour is available to download and play for free on Apple and Android smartphones and tablets. Simply download the game via Apple's App Store or Google Play for Android.

Is it really free?

The game is totally free to download and play, you'll just need an internet connection and a free Nintendo Account. There are, however, optional in-app purchases where you’d be spending real money to obtain virtual items such as new cars/characters, or a monthly 'Gold Pass' which unlocks special items.

How to prevent children from racking up a bill

We've previously heard of children using similar games to make in-app purchases without their parents’ knowledge, resulting in unexpected bills (see our 'My child spent £150 on Fortnite' MSE news story from 2018).

When setting up a Nintendo Account, you can choose to set up a special account for kids aged 15 and under. This allows parents/guardians to use parental controls to apply restrictions to the child's account, and will receive an alert if any purchases are made.

It's also possible to restrict in-app purchases directly on the device. See Apple's in-app purchases help or Google's in-app purchases help for how to do this.

Amazon Prime Day* is now live, with gaming deals across Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation. Most Prime Day deals require an Amazon Prime subscription. Prime normally costs £8.99/month or £95/year, though eligible new customers may be able to get a 30-day free trial. Just remember to cancel before the trial ends if you don’t want to keep paying.

Things to watch out for before buying

Prime subscription required. Most Prime Day deals are exclusive to Prime members. Eligible new customers may be able to use a 30-day free trial, but set a reminder to cancel if you don’t want to keep it.

Check the “was” price. Amazon’s “was” price isn’t always the best guide to whether a deal is genuinely good. Compare against other retailers and price-tracking sites before buying.

Make sure it’s the right platform. Some games have separate Xbox One/Xbox Series X, PS4/PS5, Switch and Switch 2 versions. Check the format before you buy.

Check digital vs physical. A boxed game can be resold or shared, while a digital code can’t. But digital may be more convenient and sometimes cheaper.

Watch delivery dates. Some Prime Day offers sell out quickly or shift to delayed delivery, so check the estimated delivery date before ordering.

Nintendo Switch 2 console £360 delivered*

Beat the RRP – and the incoming price hike

The Nintendo Switch 2 console is currently £369.95 at Amazon*, but you’ll get an extra £10 discount automatically applied at checkout, bringing the price down to £359.95 delivered.

That’s £36 cheaper than the current £395.99 RRP. While it’s about £11 more than the lowest price we found last Black Friday, it's worth noting that Nintendo has announced a price rise for its flagship console from 1 September.

Nintendo hasn’t confirmed the new UK price yet, but with increases of $50 in the US and €30 in Europe, it looks likely the UK RRP could rise by somewhere between £30 and £50. If that happens, this deal would be about £66 to £86 cheaper than the new RRP.

How to get the Nintendo Switch 2 console for £359.95

  1. Add the console to your basket – it should show as £369.95 on the product page.

  2. Continue to checkout, where an extra £10 discount should be applied automatically.

MSE Rob says:

With two-and-a-bit months to go until Nintendo increases the RRP of the Nintendo Switch 2, if you're thinking of getting the console then it could be worth jumping on one of these offers. This probably won't be the last Switch 2 deal around this price (it's been as low as £340 in recent weeks), but remember that once that price hike hits, it'll most likely take the discounted prices up with it.

Free protection for all shopping!

There's a little-known piece of legislation that turns any credit card into a financial self-defence superhero. 'Section 75' of the Consumer Credit Act means your plastic must protect anything you buy for more than £100 for free, so if there's a problem or the company goes bust, you can still get your money back.
And although Section 75 doesn't apply to debit cards, there is something else to fall back on if you've paid using a debit card, or used a credit card for a purchase under £100. Known as Chargeback, this is part of banks' and card companies' internal rules and not a legal requirement. Read full details of Section 75 or Chargeback, plus how to claim, in our guides.
