Online department store Debenhams* launched its 'up to 75% off' Black Friday sale on Wednesday 19 November. Debenhams told us that there were 730,000 items in its Black Friday sale.

As we predicted, additional discount codes became available on Black Friday – if you use the code SAVE10, you can get an additional £10 off a £100+ spend, with free express delivery.

'Supersaver' delivery costs £2.99, or it's free when you spend £30 or more. Currently, you can get free express delivery using the code EXPRESSDEL if you spend £25+ (this minimum spend was added on Black Friday).

Unfortunately the RRP inflation we saw last year on the Debenhams website has persisted. This is when a retailer/store increases the RRP of a product, so when it's discounted, the discount looks larger than it really is. In the case of Debenhams, this is being done by the third party sellers it features on its website. Here's an example:

We put this to Debenhams, and a spokesperson said: "Product prices are set by the brands themselves and are not determined by us. We regularly review listings to identify any pricing discrepancies and work with brands to resolve them where appropriate.”

Make sure you do your due diligence and not only compare prices but also RRPs, with other retailers.

Important: Don’t allow yourself to be taken in by the hype around Black Friday and be sucked into buying something you don’t need or can’t afford. Always do your own price comparisons to ensure you are getting the best deal possible – don’t just take a retailer’s word for it.

We're likely to see pre-Black Friday deals and discounts from Debenhams, with the main sale kicking off in the last week of November. Last year, there were additional stackable discounts available, such as an extra 20% off across selected lines on Black Friday. A warning... last year Debenhams seemed to be listing the Recommended Retail Price (RRP) of some items higher than they actually are, so the discount appeared greater.

There's a little-known piece of legislation that turns any credit card into a financial self-defence superhero. 'Section 75' of the Consumer Credit Act means your plastic must protect anything you buy for more than £100 for free, so if there's a problem or the company goes bust, you can still get your money back.
And although Section 75 doesn't apply to debit cards, there is something else to fall back on if you've paid using a debit card, or used a credit card for a purchase under £100.
