Bought a spa day from Groupon or others? Did you get it?

Bought a spa day from Groupon or others? Did you get it?

The daily deals industry needs to get its house in order. Groupon, kgbdeals, LivingSocial, Crowdity and the rest all risk being seen as ‘get the money in the bank, not the customer through the door’ merchants, unless they collectively improve standards.

Over the last year it has been boom time for daily deals sites (once known as group buying sites, but the collective purchasing element’s fast disappearing). These sites negotiate with companies big and small to offer hyper-discounted vouchers for massages, spas, dental treatments, retailers, activities and more, in return for exposure to their huge databases.

It sounds great and indeed they do provide fantastic unbeatable bargains often at a quarter of the list price. We commonly include the best of the national (not local) deals in the weekly email. Yet we have access to information most consumers don’t. When deciding whether to include something we interrogate the company about the capacity available, to try and ensure that if someone pays they should be able to get it.

Yet I’m conscious that by mentioning these sites’ national deals, we provide a path into their daily local offerings and many of our users will then join these sites and start getting them. That’s one of my prime worries and reasons for this comment.

Too many pay for deals they can’t get

No industry is free of complaints in forums or via social media. Yet what I find surprising with daily deals complaints, including from many friends, is the constancy of the problem. Using spas as an example, it tends to go a bit like this: "I saw their ad for "get an £80 massage for £20 at scrumyum spa", signed up to it and then got my voucher."

All good so far. Yet often you then hear this: "I kept trying to ring scrumyum. It’s a small spa a few miles away but they’re constantly engaged and not responding to emails." This is of course no surprise, as thousands may have descended on it trying to get their mega-discount. Even those who do get through may then be told: "There are no appointments available for months", leaving the impulse driven treat to be lost in the mists of time.

Of course not every deal fails like this, I’m sure the majority work smoothly, yet the volume of complaints feels like it is growing as the industry increases in size.

These sites are usually good at giving refunds (though it takes time, which means it’s cash in their bank not yours), but this requires you to ask – I suspect a decent proportion of people just let the vouchers go and forget – do let me know if this has happened to you.

In fact, I’ve heard of some retailers having to agree that if the individual doesn’t redeem a voucher, the daily deals site keeps all the cash and none gets passed on to the firm (eg, scrumyum spa). If true, it can mean consumers not fulfilling vouchers is the most profitable outcome for the daily deals site (I’m not suggesting it’s done deliberately, just that there isn’t a vested interest in working hard to stop this happening).

What we’d like to see happen

As a fan of daily deals sites and the opportunities they provide to consumers to get extreme discounts, I want to see the industry thrive. Yet, for that to happen in a fair way to consumers it needs to address this issue of managing capacity and to give the consumer a legitimate expectation that if they pay for a deal, they will be able to use it within a reasonable time.

Therefore, here are my thoughts on a code of conduct I’d like to see daily deals sites adopt:

  1. Retailers have the capacity to fulfil all vouchers. You should always cap the number of vouchers sold for a deal to a number that can be fulfilled in a reasonable and timely manner. And to stop working with any retailers who regularly don’t deliver.
  2. Customers get a full refund where the service has not been fulfilled. There should be no time limit on these refunds, provided customers have attempted to fulfil them in a reasonable time.
  3. The cap should be published for each deal. This would allow people to take a decision as to how busy the service is likely to get.
  4. If providers go bust the refund should be automatic. Daily deals sites work with many small companies and in our current economy that means some will go under. When this has happened we’ve heard of daily deals sites that haven’t contacted consumers and offered automatic refunds, they’ve waited until they’re claimed. That’s not appropriate.
  5. It should be published how many people taking up the offer, the retailer can serve each day. This would allow it to be easily seen how tough it could be to get an appointment. For example if it is a massage on offer, how many therapists are there? And how many massage beds are available?
  6. Retailers do not increase prices. If a voucher is sold that allows people to redeem a cash value (e.g. spend £15 and get £50 to spend in store), the company must guarantee it will not raise its prices during the voucher redeem period – otherwise this is misleading when consumers sign up.

Over the next month or so, the MoneySavingExpert.com team will be speaking to all the main daily deals sites to ask them for their view on this code of practice and if they choose not to adopt it, what they will do to ensure they are adequately managing capacity.

In the meantime I would suggest if you are using these sites, ask yourself whether the deal is one that could easily be fulfilled if many others go for it. If it’s £15 for a £50 voucher at a UK high street store – that’s great. If it’s selling a go-karting experience that only allows 5 people at a time, are you sure you’ll get a slot?

I would like to hear your experiences bad AND good about these sites, as well as any suggestions you have that we can pass to them for improvement via the links below.

I bought a service/MOT package through Groupon, only to ring the garage and be told I could have an appointment in 5 months time. Not really that appropriate, considering MOTs are rather timebound :) I had to repeatedly email to get a cash refund, rather than a voucher.

I just got screwed over by a Groupon deal to a hotel. I couldn’t get through on the telephone for a week and a half. By then all weekend bookings (I can’t get time off work in the weekdays) till the end of October had been taken. Gutted.

I recently purchased a Spa Deal via Groupon and when phoning to book my day had to wait until a month later to redeem it. When we went to the Spa the receptionist said thatthe take up was unprecedented and we were lucky to have got in, however recently I did get an email to say if I hadn’t already redeemed my voucher the ogffer was no longer being run so a refund was available.

I have used Groupon a few times now. First buying a Bodyshop voucher £35 cost me £9 which was fine, a short break for two which i booked on the same day I purchased, this was great value for money Two nights DBB and a glass of wine on arrival £89. A hot stone massage, facial and foot massage £15 each ( I purchased two) no problems. Last purchased yes i had problems with Browns in York Afternoon Tea for two £5 in which i got my friend to purchase too, she got two. We phoned to book in advance as stated but were told they did not do the offer on a Saturday the day we were traveling down, with the offer finishing a few days later we missed out, but you learn by your mistakes. I will still continue to purchase from this site.

I’ve had a Groupon deal for a kids Soft play center and a LivingSocial deal for local Wild life Center (Martin Mere).  Both were excellent value, no problems redeeming and allowed lovely days out with the kids, without breaking the bank.

I bought a one night stay at a hotel. The voucher made it look like it was a direct book with the hotel. But when I booked via the hotel’s website (and paid £5) they called me and said I had to contact a third party to do the booking. Nothing to do with them. Called the third party and they had nothing available during weekends for someone with a Groupon voucher. (It said limited availability during weekends on the voucher) I lost the £5 I paid to book online but Groupon did refund me.

Same problem with hair salon voucher. No appointments outside working hours.

    Hi Martin.
    Fully agree with your points.
Just one thing that I think you should add and that is instead the most annoying thing in respect of my experience with these deals. The most annoying thing for me is that more and more often it happens that you see a deal sold by these third party companies yet the same deal is sold on the provider’s website too, sometimes even at a better or comparable discount. Es: I bought a voucher for dining in a Brazilian restaurant and when I redeemed it I noted that on the restaurant’s website there was actually an even better offer for the night.Es: It even happened once that I called the provider of a massage treatment for my wife asking for info and they actually offered me a better deal at the phone… I think of course to avoid the third party’s fee… not very serious and thus I didn’t trust this small provider and I didn’t buy the deal neither direct nor via the websiteI now have the habit to double check before I buy the voucher and many times I end up going direct.I think it is worth noting that when this happens it also reduces the interest in the voucher… because if a retailer usually offers the same discount it means that actually it is not really a discount and thus this third party website are partly misleading the customer trying to make something exclusive and a bargain whilst it is not. The worst in this respect is, in my experience, kgbdeals but all the others presented similar problems sometimes. Also, the market is becoming now so packed that their emails are becoming like spam… too many and too many supposed deals within each email… This, coupled with the bad experiences I described above, reduced in turn my willingness to proactively check the deal: while I was used to read each email in detail, now I just scan the title and sometimes something grabs my attention. I miss the early stage where it was 1 deal per day with limited availability… it was part of the fun, now they are becoming like those voucher codes websites where too often than not the deal is not a real one…To be clear: I think i subscribed 7-8 of these websites.

Husband bought me a spa voucher – got booked in and was fabulous.  I then bought two hairdressing vouchers – the first one went OK but my second appointment got cancelled and I had to get a refund via groupon but that wasn’t any bother.  Have bought print vouchers etc which have been fine.  Also bought another hair voucher (different hairdresser) and they had to cancel my appointment because a stylist fell sick – so they happily extended the voucher till I could manage.  I’ve also bought photographic vouchers – all booked in although haven’t been yet.  Only really bad one I had was for a restaurant – had been to it previously and was nice, but they had a “groupon” menu – the food was absoloutely dire and it just felt like they’d done it as cheap as possible.  Won’t be going back there!  Definitely pleased with the overall groupon experience.

I bought a 2 person meal deal from a small resturant in sheffield. I went onto their website a couple of days later and they’s posted an announcement to say that they’d requested a cap from Groupon but they’d not stuck by it and that, if they honoured all the sales they would go bust. Had no problem getting a refund but it was disappointing. One place told me that they only receive a 50/50 split with Groupon on the deal price, which for some things must be peanuts!

I bought 9 tickets for boulevard in newcastle for my birthday and had great difficulty getting through to book up. when i eventually got through they only had mid week dates available which were not suitable, you could book a friday/saturday if you paid the full price which kind of defeats the object. i got my money back. i have had successfull purchases though for meals etc, my best one was laser quaser – £16 for 8 to play for an hour. I hope they repeat that offer again.

I have been using Groupon for a couple of years. Quite a few of the deals worked, but they were the more simpler dining deals.

As for the beauty appointments, at times, this was a different story. I am not sure if this is just the London deals though. It could takes weeks of calling and emailing before anyone dealt with your booking. I had to claim a refund more than twice due to some salon’s just not responding. Some deals had to be extended as you couldn’t get an appointment within the 6 month validity!

Sometimes the booking telephone numbers listed would have voicemail messages saying ‘this mailbox is full’. Which was infuriating. I think the main problem is that the companies that sign up with Groupon, to offer deals, do not prepare themselves for the high numbers of calls or emails. So they need to be advised that they must appoint staff specifically for dealing with the many Groupon calls that may come through. I mean, busy is good for their businesses, but I guess it is all in the balance of their outgoing costs. I must say that the Groupon customer services have always been brilliantly efficient with resolving any issues/refunds, so I am very happy with that side of things!

I have used Groupon lots of times and I am really happy with their service.  The first problem I had was with a local spa type place that hadn’t long opened, they couldn’t fit me in just like you said and even said that Groupon weren’t giving them any money.  I called Groupon and they gave me a refund, no arguments.  Then I forgot about a voucher I bought for a ‘photo to canvas’ service.  I contacted the company and they were only too happy to extend the date of the voucher so that I could use it, they couldn’t have been more helpful.  Lastly, I had one of those fish pedicure vouchers and had an nail infection just after, so thought I shouldn’t go.  I rang the company and they said ‘tough’ (not in so many words), so I contacted Groupon and although they couldn’t refund me this time, they did give me the same amount back as credit which was fine for me as I know I’d use them again, and have done since.  I’ve had haircuts, hotel stays, dinners, bootcamp sessions, cheap tickets to shows, etc.  I had my concerns about it at first but it’s all been good for me.

I have bought a few group buying deals with differing success:
3 photo site deals – 1 all purchased fine, 1 was not valid for the product I wanted (but not sufficiently advertised in my opinion) and so I got a refund, 1 I forgot and passed without me using.
3 spa deals – 1 booked fine and then cancelled due to snow, tried to reschedule, nightmare getting through on phones eventually got appointment for 6 months later but I think this was busy because the deal was featured on money saving expert email. 2 booked fine one I’ve had one I’m due to have.
1 laser hair removal course, the initial salon couldn’t cope with the demand so I was given alternative salon that was very good.
1 glasses deal – it expired while I was still trying to decide what frames I wanted but the glasses website have promised to honour the voucher anyway (very nice) just ordered the glasses so not sure of quality yet.
    Some things I have learnt:
Make a note/ reminder in a diary of expiry date.
Salon treats for 2 people at the same (peak) time are almost impossible to get, you’re better off on your own if you’re not flexible.
Anything on the MSE email will sell out/ get booked up very quickly so get in there quick or don’t bother.
It is also helpful to be able to visit the salon in person, as said above they often don’t answer the phone, frustrating!
Mostly I am happy with the group buying sites and will continue to use them.

I have made 2 purchases through Groupon. One was a exfoliation and massage treatment for me & my Mam for Mothers Day. We got booked in fine, we were treated exactly like the customers who were paying full price, and both had a wonderful time. This is something I wouldn’t have been able to afford had it been full price and it was the first time either of us had had any sort of treatment. Although we are hoping to return!

The second is a Father’s Day gift, which I won’t mention in case he sees this! Yes we haven’t been yet! It is something we are going to do as a family and something I have little interest in, however Dad will love it and that’s what matters to me! I have had a lot of trouble making a booking for this one but to be perfectly honest it is simply because I am trying to work around 3 peoples work shifts plus availability at the place we are going to! :) Anyway I have the booking now for August thanks to holiday allowance at work! And I’m sure Dad will have a great time – but again if this had been full price there was no way I could have scraped the money together!

So as far as I am concerned, keep it up. These sites allow us to do things or go places we normally wouldn’t have the chance to – and I, for one, am grateful for that!

I’ve used Groupon for Southampton and National deals a few times now, as
have some of my friends and haven’t had any problems except for one
deal taking a couple of weeks to send me the voucher.  I do recommend Groupon to friends.

One on my deals was a falconry experience and the deal was perfectly fine.  But I got into a chat with one of the keepers (it was a small family owned place) who said that they had set a cap with Groupon and that Groupon sold almost twice as many deals meaning they had to increase the group sizes to honour the vouchers.  So I think part of the problem is the group buying sites overselling past the retailers caps rather than just the retailers being at fault.

we bought vouchers thro’ Groupon for half price meals in a Bristol restaurant – everything was fine (just wish the drinks had been half price aswell)

    I am a bit of a groupon
groupie and use these type of sites a lot, most of the time things go
well but there are exceptions. I paid for a got stone massage for me
and a friend to be told the person that does them is on maternity leave
and they can’t find a replacement at the moment (surely they knew this
before the offer!). I also brought a yoga deal but could only do the
Saturday ones due to work so before I brought the deal I rang up to
check there would be space for me on this day, I was guaranteed there
would be they took all my details and 3 months later I am still
waiting! I brought a KGB handy man deal that advertised Choose from a
variety of services including  guttering and If you’re the sort of
person who can’t change a light bulb without depriving your neighbours
of electricity, then we’ve got a great kgbdeal
for you. I needed a gutter pushed back together and loose wires
leading to a bulb sorting. After I brought the deal it then said they couldn’t
do anything with electrics (the light) or plumbing (the gutter), I
felt very cheated! If they are offering the deal they should be able to
fill it! In my opinion the whole point of these offers from a
customers point of view is not just a great deal budget wise but to see
what kind of service the company offers if they cannot fulfil what they promise then it’s a total waste for both parties!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=697031802 Emma Morgan

Bought a voucher for hair treatments for £50 through an offer through my sister-in-law’s workplace (similar idea as Groupon) and every time I tried they had no space – voucher has now run out so I’ve lost £50 !

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=702781489 Chrissy Hambrook- Richardson

I have had a few vouchers through these deals. Only the first one, the facial & massage did I have problems with, The salon it’s self kept cancelling. But as soon as I rang Groupon and explained, they gave me a full refund there & then. I am having a bit of a problem with trying to purchase and a pair of £99 straighteners for £15. The voucher code is not working on the site. I am waiting for a reply from them.

I can’t criticise  Groupon or Kgbdeals, it’s the companies agreeing to put these deals on and then not being able honouring them. They should just sell a limited amount, so they can cope with everyone, or not sell them at all.

But I do look forward to many more, meal deals, hair deals and others in the future.

I have used Group-On for a few deals. Mostly restaurants which have turned out well. I have also used it for a Ebookers money off hotel deal which has worked fine, lastly (and this seems to be a regular theme) I bought a manicure/pedicure session( in March I managed to get an appt for June (on my birthday) only to be told the same day (after going up thier) that their was a problem with the salon and it had to close for the day.

Little did they know I was already up Oxford street by then so decided to go up thier, well it was not thier salon at all, the receptionist told me that they merely ‘rent out a room’ and use it. She told me that people had been mucked about so badly by this paticular company (Immaculate Beauty) anyway after speaking to the lovely receptionis thier I decided to ring Immaculate to give them a piece of my mind – a manager promised to call me back but I never did get that call,.

Ok so I eventually get to rebook, they then phoned to say they had to cancel this appt as well as the ‘oxford street branch’ had some staffing issues – remember this is not a branch its a room rented from another company. So they are basically trying to insult buyers by lying as well. In thier defence they did offer me an appt at ther victoria branch which I could not make. so I have now rebooked for next month…..hope that goes well for me!!!

My first Groupon deal  was for a hairdressing deal, no problems with that one. My second was for a cleaning deal. After 3 days of trying to contact the company, I gave up and got a refund from Groupon

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1483144842 Sian Evans

After a great start, I have had nothing but trouble with Groupon.
I had two dealers who decided to withdraw the offers before I had managed to book them. Not Groupon’s fault, but when I told them what had happened, sending them all the details, the only response I got was that I should book the deals within the alloted time – so I had to send them back my copy confirmation mail, showing clearly that there was a massive FOUR MONTHS before one of them was due to expire, and a month for the other one. They begrudgingly offered me a credit note on their site.
A little demoralised, I signed up to another deal, and paid an extra £4 – hoping that this would be the end of it. This deal also fell through – and I contacted Groupon after trying over nearly 3 weeks to contact the dealer, only to get the reply – well, deals are very popular in the early days – again, another  email, saying this wasn’t early days, and I wanted a refund.
For some reason they were able to refund my extra £4, but not the original sum??!!
All I want is just to have my money back and forget about them, which I told them in my last email, but I have to carry on plodding away, trying to get deals, and fighting for a refund when they get cancelled. Sigh……

I purchased two (expensive) Chocolate Spa massage/treat days for me and my partner and, as you reported, there was a problem. The spa company had gone into liquidation shortly after the deal had been offered. I contacted Groupon online and after a few days had an email with an apology and an immediate full refund. I was happy with the outcome. I have since purchased quite a few deals from Groupon and LivingSocial, mostly restaurant meals and skin treatments, and have not had a problem (other than having to produce a paper copy of the voucher as they don’t allow visual proof via a smartphone). I am yet to use my vouchers for other things like days out, hair salon treatments and canvas prints. In all, I have been extremely happy with the fabulous discounted offers that I have taken advantage of.

No problems with Groupon so far (touch wood!). I’ve bought a voucher for folding flatmates (though the nicest ones were out of stock) and a hairdressing voucher which was well worth the price I paid. I’ve still got a steak meal for 2 and a block of 10 powerplate sessions to arrange yet so fingers crossed everything’s OK with them. The only one I’ve had an issue with is Crowdity where they offered £20 or something like that off your first shop at Ocado for free which I registered for fine and got told I’d got the voucher. Then they emailed a day later to say that a massive amount of people had already used the codes and that it had ended, even though there was another week to go. I suppose I can’t complain as I didn’t pay anything but they shouldn’t allow that many people to get vouchers if they can’t cope with the demand. They were quite obviously generic voucher codes that could be used multiple times that people posted on forums rather than one code per person. Not been on Crowdity since!

i bought some head phones through Groupon, changed my mind within a few days of receiving my voucher and managed to get my money back. i have not personally had a problem with groupon,

However, they did have a£10deal to join the shopping club…which i looked into as it supposedly gives you cashback for spending money at certain shops, i think it is also meant to give you money off at certain supermarkets.  when someone else looked into it and asked at the supermarket…they had never heard of it. me thinks, if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is…especially if its a few%off your shopping!

Had loads of groupon deals and never had a problem and will continue to use it. The only time I did have a problem was with a segway voucher, everytime I tried to book they were full, I contacted groupon 7mths after buying the voucher and told them and they refunded the amount back as a credit to reuse at alater date. Im happy with that.

I bought a hotel voucher through Living Social for a hotel in York. I struggled to get through to book the room and after many phone calls finally got through. I was told they’d sold 100s of rooms and the first Fri/Sat evening available would be in 2012!

At first I was worried they wouldn’t do refunds but to be fair to Living Social I rang them and got the refund very easily. I absolutely agree with your code of conduct above though, because it probably would have meant I didn’t buy the voucher and would have saved me a lot of time.

Bought a spa day for my mum and I. First I knew that the spa were rejecting it was on facebook. 3 days of me (and everyone else) trying to get in touch later and I had to ring their ‘just for clients’ line. Took a good while to get a refund and has truly put me off using them.

No mega problems but KGB earlier this month, got a car valet.  It ran out in May, tried to book all may no one answered the phone.  Told KGB who said as the voucher had run out all I would get the equivalent in KGB deal money that ran out after 60 days.

Yes, it shouldnt have run out but its not for lack of trying to contact them, so if your having problems make sure you report before it runs out

Have purchased a few voucher offers from Groupon and found them to be very good although their customer service email is rather slow. Crowdity is another matter. purchased a tooth whitening kit which had a rrp of £121 for £25. Order took over a month to arrive, apparently had been sent out twice and lost in post twice! when it finally did arrive, the kit wasnt worth the voucher price, neve mind the full price. No refund offered for this fiasco even though I emailed the company many times. Will never use them again

I have had bad experiences with Groupon and now avoid deals that require you to make an appointment. I had to get a refund for one spa voucher – it took months to get an appointment and then they cancelled on me the day before. With another voucher I had to wait 6 months for the appointment and the service at spa from booking to the actual visit was terrible.

Even the most basic and common ones – cinema vouchers failed to materialise and took me 3 months to get a refund with constant complaing.  My friend paid for a spa treatment and booked the appointment but fell violently sick (terrible flu that was going around at the time) so called in advance to reschedule but they refused to allow and changes to the booking so she lost out, her complaints to the website who sold the offer came to nothign aswell.   I am sure the majority get what they pay for or surely they wouldn’t be so popular, but there does need to be a framework to resolve issues as you have laid out to protect the consumer.    I do think that people should think before going for a deal, they look like great bargains with huge discounts, but stop and think if it is something you woudl have paid for anyway, half the time I think we are lured by discounts and savings but if you would never have looked into it before then the chances are you don’t need it.

I’ve bought quite a few Groupon and Last Minute vouchers and while they were difficult to book up immediately, were easily booked a few months later and were good quality and excellent value experiences.  In one case a spa did go out of business before I booked but on contacting Last Minute was given a gift voucher for a little over the amount originally paid, by return.  I think many of the participating companies may be small and out of their depth with the initial large demand, but I imagine their prime aim is to bring in new people who will hopefully become regular customers and they will therefore do their absolute best to provide as good a service as possible.  It would be good if you could automatically be given a refund if a voucher cannot be honoured for whatever reason but I imagine it would be fairly difficult for the promoter to know which vouchers had or had not already been used, especially if the company no longer tradaed, and there could perhaps be difficulties with dishonest claims if a general notice informing all voucher purchasers about the situation was sent out.  I suppose I could have insisted on a refund when the spa I had booked for ceased trading, but I had booked a spa treatment and as the spa was unknown to me, the actual spa I went to was not an important factor.  I was quite happy to have a gift voucher to use for another spa.

I bought a groupon for teeth whitening for myself and my daughter from Whiter Smile Studio, I bought it because my daughter is getting married on 30th July.  I had lots of problems getting an appointment, no one ever answered the phone, constant voice mail and no message facility, but managed finally to get an appointment via their web site two weeks before the wedding.  On the afternoon of the appointment I received an email saying that they were short of staff so couldn’t see us. I was asked to re-book, I explained the situation and was assured that we could go on the following Sunday and someone would contact me the next day. 10 dayss later… and I’m still waiting.  I did manage to get a refund, but that wasn’t the point. Really bad service from Whiter Smile Studio, would not use them again or reccommend them.

I purchased one such deal last year back in September from Travelzoo for the spa day in Tunbridge Wells, I bought it for my aunt and I to spend a day together.  After purchasing I phoned the spa to make a reservation to find the earliest they could fit us in was April 2011.  I did book for that time as I wasn’t going to let my hard earned money go to waste, but had they said there would be a 7 month waiting list, I certainly wouldn’t have purchased it.

I also bought another deal which was from Groupon for a local beauty treatment, facial massage, which once I purchased the deal, I phoned the Hera salon in Medway and was able to book for the following week, which suited me fine.

I had a problem booking a KGB 2 night b and b deal in Scotland. The hotel had spare capacity but was full for many weeks for KGB deal clients. I contacted KGB and had no problem getting a refund. I have bought other deals from Groupon, KGB and Living Social and so far had no problems redeeming them. I have found them a great way of trying out places I would not normally have gone to.

bought a beauty treatment before xmas and only got to use it after phoning for 2 weeks and then getting an extension to the time limit of the deal . we eventually had our treatment in june?? have to say my treatments were great, but my friend who booked with me had a very average experience as she had a student who was brought in to help get through the numbers. would buy again.

I bought a product on the 24th June, website stated 21 days delivery. I then received an email from the company on the 21st day to say that delivery would now be 28 days due to demand. It has now been 35 days and they are not answering my emails if you ring they want to put you through to a spa shop which then tells you it is nothing to do witht he shops, I rang Groupon and they said that they have a email from O Spa and it is now taking 6 weeks, it has been 5 weeks for me so I have to now give them another 1 week.  It is frustrating to know that they have my money and this was going to be a present.

I have had a bad experience from cowdity I bought a £20 ASOS voucher for £9.00 but when I went to use it ASOS wouldn’t except it, I went back to Cowdity who advised that there was a problem & to leave it a few days by the time I went back to ASOS to use my voucher it had expired.

I bought 2 vouchers for boat trips with Bath City Boats through Groupon. There were limitations as to use, but not prohibitive (something like not Saturdays). This was then changed to Sundays ONLY, but a full refund was offered which I accepted. The refund came extremely quickly

I have used groupon many times and had no problems up until now but the last few deals i have bought have not come to fruition, I have failed to get a response by e-mail from the companies involved and no phone number is given. Groupon have been unhelpful in bringing the deal to completion and have usually suggested i get a refund. I am currently waiting to hear from 2 companies but am not hopeful. We booked a spa and had to wait 6 months for an appointment only to have it cancelled at 24 hours notice, we lost the cost of the hotel we had booked and are waiting for a refund. I would be very cautious in future of using these sites, the problem is definitely getting worse.

I have not found any problems with Groupon or kgb deals. I’ve had hairdo, non-surgical face lift, meals, bowling etc. All have been fulfilled no problem. The first one was for a hairdo and they even extended the deadline as they were inundated with callers. I think they are great. Just got back from a Thai restaurant with my husband where we had a lovely meal. We noticed lots of other people redeeming vouchers as well. Keep up the good work.

I have experienced much enjoyment from the Groupon site.  A variety of experiences from fish pedicures, mini golf, beauty treatments, hotel breaks (1 or 2 nights) and speciality coffee shops and restaurants I would never have tried only for the great offers.  Everything has been first class, so far.  Look forward to hearing your comments and keep up the good work on this super website.

i have used groupon and kgb for many deals – hairdo, facelift, bowling and several meals. i’ve never had any problems with any of them. I’ve only used groupon a couple of times and have been very happy,  i do check daily as i’m looking for a bargin romantic break at a nice hotel, i always read reveiws of any hotels offering breaks first, maybe its a good idea to let users leave a review on groupon then we can see the good and the bad and make our own mind up.

I’ve been using Groupon in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Dundee for over a year now and although I have on 2 occasions forgot to use the voucher in time (my fault) I have never had a problem claiming the vouchers and the companies involved have been great sometimes extending the period for me, sometimes opening later than usual to cope with the high demand of customers. Recommend to anyone :)

I used Living Social Deals for a massage at the Hilton Hotel in Manchester.  When I went to book it, I was told that it was at another location which was too far for me to travel to. Obviously whoever ran the Spa got all the money in then did a bunk!  Very disappointed and I lost 29.00.

I’ve had loads of deals through both Groupon and KGBDeals and have not had any problems in using them. One of the retailers under a Groupon deal even extended the redemption period voluntarily because of the high demand they had…seems fair enough to me. I’ve sometimes had a struggle to get through on the phone but with savings this good you’ve got to expect them to be busy surely?

I had a Living Social voucher for £35 at Oasis for £15, and a Groupon one similar for the Body Shop, absolutely no problem with either of those. Have had mixed experiences with Wahanda deals, one spa day turned out very well, but other times I had vouchers for a manicure at an Oxford St salon & a massage in Covent Garden, both times I found it very difficult to get them booked in (had to wait literally months), and I felt like we were treated less well than full-paying customers, staff were even complaining that they were having to do so many “voucher deals” and weren’t making as much money. It’s made me a bit wary and I think in future I’ll try to stick to the ones that are a straight financial exchange without any customer service involved!

I bought a voucher from Groupon for Collagen Face Masks from OSpa in London.  I had previously bought the same deal and everything went smoothly.  However this time not the case.  I have tried to purchase the Masks but the website wont accept the Voucher Number.  I have tried unsuccessfully to contact OSpa on the Tel No. – just given a recorded message and via email – just get back standard reply saying they will get round to my request in due course – that was over 6 weeks ago.

I have contacted Groupon who responded with an apology, tried to re-register the Voucher No. unsuccessfully and have now just said take it up with OSpa.  Only wish I could but they wont respond.

Ive had a few groupons but  the last 2 have not quite lived up to its glamours selling page.  I booked for a luxury pedicure and manicure.  The salon was dirty and disorganised they have been selling so many vouchers for different treatments, that as I was having (not a luxury pedicure at all) my pedicure she was showing another 2 girls what to do, not quite the training I would have expected.  Most of the equipment in the salon was either broken, wobbily or not very clean!  I felt like I was rushed in and out and left with more nail narish on my toes then my nails.  They were selling way more vouchers than they could cope with and it felt like you were just a money making scheme not a customer they wanted to make sure they got to use the salon again.  But then a horse riding experience I booked for my daughter was excellent.  Its very much pot look, but I would look into the salon before booking beauty treatments again.

Ive used groupon 3 times now once for go karting which had no problems getting booked.  I’ve just ordered a photobook as well so hopefully that has no problems.  However i have also ordered a photo canvass (the website does say there is a lead time of 21 days due to high demand – due to groupon no doubt) last month which still has not arrived (now been more than 28 days) and i had no response to my chaser email on Monday so emailed again last night and awaiting response.

with Groupon i paid £ 10 for two £5 tickets for an adult to Dudley Zoo .it said you could buy buy multiple vouchers but there were no instructions to say you had to buy them one at a time. i only got one voucher but in my innocence assumed it would be ok for 2 people. silly me. when i got to the zoo they would only allow 1 in for £5 i had to pay full price for other adult.i contacted Groupon when i got back & they said they had definately sent me two vouchers. i argued that i only had one & they agreedas a gesture of good faith to credit my groupon account with £5 but i have to use this within 6 months. i think the instructions are very vague, so unless i see something really worthwhile for my £5 credit i wont be bothering again.

Twice now I have bought Groupon restaurant deals and on both occasions the restaurant refused to honor it, the first they accused Groupon of fraud and the second I had 2 weeks until it expired but the restaurant said they were fully booked at the weekend for Groupon, I then said I would have any day / any time over the next two weeks and they said… sorry fully booked for Groupon.

Both were fully refunded without problem.

Looks like there is a problem with OSpa. I bought the voucher for hair streightner and had a problem with the voucher number at first, when they finally accepted the voucher it said on the deal that i should get my straightner within 2 weeks and won’t be waiting longer than 28 days. Bought the voucher on the 9th July and got e-mail from them that they will be sending next bunch on the week commencing 15th of August. How is that 28 days?

I have several kgb coupons. I have not experienced any problems so far from 5 of them. Where I had a problem that I had caused they dealt with it immediately. Two hair salons had staff illness but rang and rearranged the date.  I have had more problems with ‘Buy a Gift’ and am still waiting for something that ran out over a year ago. They have kept it validated but the salons just don’t call. Now that kgb is using TV ads things might change.

This comes under the heading of a ‘loss leader’ you sell the teddy well below price but it brings in a huge amount of business as a result, and in some cases because you sell so many you actually make a good profit too. So the business could be small and still benefit in the long run, however I can see why in your case that this could be a slippery slope in the wrong direction.  Good point, well put.

I purchased an afternoon tea deal  and have to say that if what I got was the full price afternoon tea then it wasnt worth it. I felt the tea I got was only actually only worth what I had paid for it and that I had been given a smaller amount because I had paid through groupon.  I have also purchased canvas prints that are great value and quality but take ages and ages to arrive!

Very disappointed with Groupon.  I used them to book a Haircut and Colour at a local salon.  On phoning to book i was asked whether i was using Groupon.  When i said yes I was told they had no availability for Groupon bookings until two months ahead.  I asked for a Saturday appointment, they said the Groupon deal was not available for Saturdays (this was not in the smallprint anywhere).  They just seemed to be very reluctant to honour the Groupon deal.
Not sure whether the problem is with Groupon or the Nuda Salon, but there seemed to be a complete lack of communication.

I have used groupon for the first time recently. I purchased a pair of straightners on 5th july ( with a 28 day delivery) I have not yet receieved them which I wanted as a birthday present (date now gone). The company take ages to reply to correspondance and when they did, they said a batch had been dispatched and the next batch to be dispatched will be 15th August so hopefully mine will be dispatched then. I am not certain they will arrive or whether they will be the quality advertised, I absolutely agree with the recomendations you are making. I don’t think i would have purchased this item if I had known what I do now. I would be very wary of using groupon again.

I’ve used Groupon for a number of local and national deals.  Not really had major issues but I couldn’t get hold of the beautician I’d bought a voucher from for a pamper package.  I tried numerous times and it was always an answer-phone.  I did leave 2 messages and after about 5 attempts over about 1 week, I emailed Groupon asking if anyone else had experienced the same.  Coincidently I got a call from the beautician later that day saying they’d been out at a graduation!  I’m booked in for the facial next week. It was the same when I received a voucher for skid pan training – I could never get hold of anyone to book a session.  The experience itself was pretty good and well organised.  I’ll keep using the sites for now but after reading everyone’s else’s experiences I will only pay what I’m prepared to lose.

I have bought a Groupon voucher for OSpa, and a voucher from Play.com again for OSpa.
For the Groupon voucher – I called and called, promised callbacks, promised dates for the appointment. After 4 weeks gave up – got a refund without too make trouble from Groupon.
The voucher from Play.com – booked appointment, it was cancelled the day before, booked again, again it was cancelled the day before. I visited my local OSpa – it had been closed. Went to my next local one, to see a sign that they weren’t offering treatments anymore. OSpa took no responsiblity, after a 5 day discussion and official complaint, Play.com finally gave me a refund.
I am no longer a customer of Groupon, OSpa or Play.com.

My groupon for a gentleman’s haircut at Sirimi Salon in Birmingham was not honoured as Sirimi said the demand had been overwhelming (although they offered to book me in at a different discount price so they couldn’t have been THAT busy!) But I tried phoning and emailing Groupon for two weeks to say Sirimi are no longer accepting Groupons and that I would like a refund. Groupon did not answer the phone once and another week later I got a reply saying they were sorry I would like to cancel the Groupon and gave me a refund. I didn’t want to cancel it, the salon were not taking them.

My husband bought me a Groupon 1 hours massage as an Xmas present, £14 instead of £45. I rang the spa in April but they were fully booked but they extended the time.  I then rang in May and was booked in for mid-July being told I was the last one.  Staff at the spa said that Groupon had oversubscribed against their cap and that the spa only received about £6 per person from Groupon!
The spa were assuming that everyone else would get there money back.  The staff at this particular spa were brilliant as was the massage (I’ve never had one before).

I have never had any problems at all! I have used Groupon and Wahanda’s Mobdeals multiple times, in Birmingham. Most recently I did wait till near the very end of the redeemable period to book (Groupon), and the salon was very good about fitting me in even though they were deluged with other last-minute voucher holders. I think this kind of thing is simply the nature of offers with fixed redemption periods and can’t be helped – it’s something you have to accept when going for this kind of deal. For me the risk of not getting a place if I choose to wait until the last minute to book is worth getting such a good price.

I dont think it is Groupon that is letting consumers down.  I think it is the retailer who is biting off more than they can handle and giving Groupon a bad name.

We have purchased two meals on Groupon.  The first one was an Italian in Crossgates Leeds.  We had difficulty booking and when we arrived they made us feel really uncomfortable at using our voucher.  We spent far more than the voucher and as it was midweek and a bad experience I complained to Groupon, but never received a reply.

We visited the Indian restaurant in Leeds and the opposite was experienced, they made us welcome had a card that stated exactly what was on offer and made us feel very welcome.

Again we spent far more than the voucher and decided that this scheme is not for us.

I have used Groupon for lots of Hull and National deals, and I think it is amazing!! I have had meals, weekends away, beauty treatments all at a fraction of the price. All vouchers have been dealt with no problems at all, the products/services have been just as they were advertised and I can honestly say I have never thought what a waste of money or been disappointed.  I certainly would recommend Groupon to my friends as I am one of Groupons biggest fans!

I’ve used Groupon on many occasions and most offers have been excellent (eg a virgin balloon ride I’ve just taken),  However, some have been below standard and some simply awful. I have to say that Groupon so far have been very fair with me about offering refunds should the deal really not be up to standard, providing I give them an accurate and fair description. It doesn’t take long to report and they are usually prompt at replying.

My bad experiences hasn’t put me off buying from them but perhaps I am more cautious at what is achievable (eg can you really get that sea view room in that little hotel at the weekends? Did you check you are getting the senior stylist with that hairdressing appointment you just made etc.etc.)

Another small niggle I have noticed recently is when items required for the offer are not included in the cover price- e.g. large postage costs or a car service I purchased recently had said the ‘parts’ (oil filter etc) were not included, although this was not obvious on the advertised Groupon page.  I was also charged for the oil in the oil change which really perplexed me.  It meant my service was double the price I expected to pay.  Still in contact with them over this one and so yet to hear their final comments on this one.

No a handyman is not a plumber or a electrician but a handyman can put his hand to most things and this includes basic plumbing tasks.  I think pushing a guttering back together is a task anyone can do however even the window cleaner!

I have used Groupon for Portsmouth and London deals.  Have had excellent experiences with all purchases so far.  I even bought a champagne Virgin balloon flight which was an AMAZING deal.  Reading some other people’s posts, it worries me now!  I think all has been well for me, as I have tried to redeem the voucher asap after purchasing and tried to be flexible on dates etc.  I have not ever purchased beauty or spa type treatments, so maybe they are the ones to avoid according to some posts here!  All in all a very happy Groupon customer.

I have a cleaning and maintenance company and was recommended by one of my contractors to offer our service on Groupon.  Sounded like a great idea – he had put a carpet cleaning deal onto the site, which resulted in a fantastic response.  He told me that Groupon were eager to try a deal for domestic cleaning in this area, so I agreed to do this, together with an offer on oven cleaning and gardening.  When discussing these with the Groupon rep, I agreed to do this over a period of several months.  However, they advertised a 2 hour cleaning service on the site for 24 hours, and also included the oven clean as a sub offer, on the same day, and kept it on for 3 days!!  The gardening offer was then put on a week later……….As I run my business from home, my home telephone number, and address were advertised as contact details.  My phone has not stopped ringing anything from 7.30 a.m. till 10 p.m., plus I have had people knocking on my door, wanting to book.  I have been shouted at, told that I am incompetent, threatened with reporting my web site to Google suggesting it is de ranked etc etc.  I have lost two members of staff due to the demands of some customers.  One customer has texted me complaining that staff left early so I should reimburse her for 15 minutes.  These people are getting a 2 hour clean by 2 cleaning staff for £15.  To be honest I cannot keep up with the demand and when contacting Groupon they offered help with a booking system ( no good to me).  I have asked for all the gardening to be refunded and am keen to offer refunds on the cleaning and oven clean before my business collapses.  Your comments would be very helpful.

The same goes for our Australian counterparts! And of course I’ve used them once and was in shock for a hair cut and colouring of my hair! A no goer! Unless they get their act together it will not work as these are usually small biz owners who can not cope with capacity! Pick up the pace discounted dealers or there won’t be an industry! NOT TO MENTION they can be do dangerous to your CREDIT CARD/S!!!!

I have used Groupon since its inception and the only bad experience I have had was at Aloka Day Spa in Brighton where I received a half hour instead of an hour massage – and the therapist actually adjusted the clock to make it look as though I’d had a full hour – and then vanished to ‘take a yoga class…!’  Needless to say, I would never return and also make a point of advising as many people as possible, not to go.

Purchased a voucher for a local pub/restaurant in April. Tried to book in June, lady asked straight away if it was a groupon voucher and then said they were fully booked & very busy as they had sold so many. Said to call back in a few weeks when rush had died down. I did twice more - same response.  Called Groupon for a refund. Got through after 15 mins on hold only to be told it is my fault as the voucher is about to expire so of course the restaurant cannot be expected to honour it!!! Had actually tried at several points to redeem the voucher and lady herself told me they had been overwhelmed by the amount of people using them and that they only receive half the voucher cost from groupon etc Despite not being able to fulfill their side of the contract will only offer me credits to my groupon account but currently refusing to refund me via paypal. Waiting for a line manager to call me back but not holding my breath…

Seems that Groupon’s idea of a refund is Groupon credits – I want my cash back to spend on what I want!!Have recommended Groupon to lots of people but won’t be in future.

Would be interested to know from the people who say thay got a refund whether this was a true cash refund to their card/paypal account or Groupon credits as it seems really easy to get them to refund via groupon credits but nigh on impossible to get your actual cash back.

I bought a spa day, only to find out today the spa has gone into liquidation, just before my day. Who am I entitled to chase for a refund?

I bought laser hair removal in January from Groupon and when I went today for my first treatment the company has gone into liquidation. I paid on credit card, can I get my money back?
